MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER OF FREE STATE
The Provincial Commisioner of the Free State, Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane is concerned about minor children as well as school learners who are mostly reported missing. Thus parents are sternly warned to know the whereabouts of their children. Know their friends and ensure that there is open communication with their children.
Parents must from time to time check the cellphones of their children, who are they communicating with, their friends on social media and observe the strange movements of walking far away when their cellphones ring or its always on silent. Is there any pornographic material in their cellphones.
Know your neighbour initiative can be of assistance because parents with the help of neighbours can be observant regarding clothing. Clothing is of paramount importance when a person is missing, there is no reporting after 24 hours or complainants be told to go and look for the missing persons themselves before a Missing Persons File is registered. All SAPS members are been trained how to deal with missing persons especially for women, mentally challenged, the elderly and children because it’s a priority.
A recent incident, it’s of the late Thato Tumahole, a Grade 12 learner who was reported missing and the search was initiated instantly until the human remains were found from an unused ventilation shaft, which led to the arrest of a 22 year old suspect. He appeared in Welkom Magistrate Court and abandoned his bail and will re-appear on the 12 June 2024 for further investigation.
When your child display a drastic change on his or her behaviour for instance stealing money or valuable items from the house. Always in isolation or living in fear, seek help instantly. There might be threats to sell drugs on behalf of drug lords.
