RESOLUTION TO GRANT DISCOUNT ON OUTSTANDING ACCOUNTS OWED TO THE MUNICIPALITY

MEDIA RELEASE: RESOLUTION TO GRANT DISCOUNT ON OUTSTANDING ACCOUNTS OWED TO THE MUNICIPALITY
FOR ATTENTION: MATJHABENG RESIDENTS AND STAKEHOLDERS
In its ordinary sitting of 25 July 2023. Council of Matjhabeng Local Municipality resolved to offer customers full and final settlement discounts for 90 days, in accordance with the Local Government Municipal Finance Act 2003 and its Credit and Debt Control Policy.
Understanding the financial constraints faced by some of our valued residents and businesses, the Council has taken proactive step to provide relief and support during these trying times. As part of this initiative, we are pleased to announce the implementation of a discount period to address outstanding accounts owed to the municipality.

The discount period will be in effect from 1st of August 2023 to 31st October 2023. During the discount period, residents of Matjhabeng who owe more than R30 000 will be eligible for a once-off 40 % reduction on their outstanding balances upon settlement. Likewise, Businesses owing more than R 50 000 will receive a 35% reduction on the amounts owed. This criterion will only be applicable to arrear debt that is older than 90 days.
Consumers who also need to settle their debt for clearance purposes will be liable for a settlement discount ONLY if they have not benefitted from Section 118 of the MPRA already. Should consumer/representative apply for a settlement discount on Section 118 figures, such discount will not be approved.
We are of the view that this discount will provide significant relief to those who may be facing financial difficulties and encourage timely payments of debts owed to the municipality.

This resolution intends to ease the burden on our community and pave the way for a fresh start.
However, we want to emphasise that once you have settled your outstanding accounts during this period. It is essential to continue keeping up with your current accounts. Consistent and timely payments will contribute to the sustainable growth and development of our municipality, enabling us to provide better services and facilities for everyone.

In the event that you fail to maintain regular payments after settling your accounts during this discounted period, the municipality will be obliged to revert the discounted amount, as stated in the resolution. We kindly urge all residents and business to adhere to their financial responsibilities to avoid any disruptions in the future.

Consumers are advised to visit municipal finance offices in all six units of Matjhabeng to make payments or to get more information on the full and final settlement discounts. Terms and conditions apply.
We hope that this move by Council will ease the financial burden on our residents and foster a spirit of collaboration between the municipality and its residents, including businesses in the area.
Together, we can build a stronger and more resilient Matjhabeng.
End.
